San Diego Chargers: Showing signs of fight

The San Diego Chargers fought, scratched, and clawed their way to a victory on Sunday. It wasn’t pretty, but the Chargers found a way to get the win 34-33 against the Ravens, and that is all that matters. Going down the stretch, they will have to continue to find a way to scrape out victories if they want to make the playoffs because the last four games of the season are against very tough teams.

Trailing 23-13 going into the fourth quarter, it wasn’t looking good for the Chargers. Behind by ten points in the fourth, Philip Rivers rallied his team to score three touchdowns.  Of the three touchdowns, two of them were passing from Rivers, while the other was a run by Ryan Mathews. On the game Rivers threw for an impressive 383 yards, but in the fourth quarter alone he threw for an astounding 151 yards- almost half of what he threw for for the entire game.

San Diego has the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos at home, and then finish out the season on the road at the San Francisco 49ers and at the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chargers could not have asked for a more difficult schedule going down the stretch,  but it has never been easy for the bolts. One of the fourteen teams that still hasn’t won a Superbowl, the Chargers have an uphill battle to climb.

Both the Patriots and Broncos are 9-3 this year, and both the 49ers and Chiefs are 7-5. Sitting at 8-4, the Chargers still control their destiny in the AFC West. This isn’t one of those process of elimination ends to the season where the Chargers are on their heels fighting with their backs against the wall.  How they finish out the season is entirely up to them. Despite the tough schedule, the Chargers are in a good spot.

Even though the Chargers are in a good position, they are playing very tough teams. Philip Rivers needs to be the guy that steps up to the plate and rallies this football team to wins down stretch.

When you visit San Diego, Chargers fans mainly wear the jerseys of the three prominent Chargers players: Ryan Mathews, Antonio Gates, and none other than Philip Rivers. Rivers, having the most popular jersey across San Diego, has been the player Chargers fans have looked up to for the last eight years now. When the Chargers are successful, Rivers gets the praise, and when they lose, he receives the hate.

The Chargers aren’t the best team in the NFL. If they were, they wouldn’t have lost to the Miami Dolphins 37-0 on the road. The other three losses are more acceptable because two of them were within three points.  Those types of games could go either way.

The most interesting statistic I see is that the Chargers are a mediocre 3-3 on the road and an astonishing 5-1 at home. Let’s hope it’s more than that year round summer sun that helps the Chargers win at home. Let’s hope that veteran Philip Rivers has gained the experience and knowledge necessary to push this team deep into the playoffs.
