In an offseason of uncertainty, the San Diego Chargers just added stability with the signing of their best NFL player. Quarterback Philip Rivers will stay with the Chargers for 4 more years with a contract worth about 84 million with 64 million guaranteed. This deal while pricy, looks to benefit both sides as Rivers contract situation finally comes to an end
Year Age Cap Hit
2015 33 $21,166,668
2016 34 $21,000,000
2017 35 $18,500,000
2018 36 $19,500,000
2019 37 $20,500,000
2020 38 UFA
While the Chargers were willing to franchise tag Rivers for the the next two years, costing the Bolts about 25 million per year, the teams front office will now pay Rivers about 20 million a year while Rivers will get the stability he was hoping for. While Rivers now has one of the priciest deals in the NFL (getting paid 37 million just in 2015), he will now have the chance to retire as a member of the Chargers and give the team a chance to compete in the playoffs for 4 more years.
Regardless of how people view this deal, Rivers staying with the Chargers give the team and its fan base stability and optimism as the Bolts will continue to count on one of the better NFL quarterbacks to guide the team throughout the Tom Telesco and Mike McCoy era.
